Apple to stream video of tomorrow's live event http://www.muzob.com/items/view/5298 I shared an item on google reader

It looks like Apple has decided that it's finally time to let the public in on their press events -- the company will be streaming live footage from the event tomorrow on its website. Traditionally, the company has depended on third parties (like, ahem, us -- we'll still be metaliveblogging the event here on TUAW, don't worry), but it looks like tomorrow's event is free for everyone to watch.

That's assuming things all go to plan, of course -- it'll likely be tough for even Apple to keep up with the demand of streaming out live video to what must be millions of people around the world. Apple's PR release says that the stream will be up on Apple.com tomorrow at 10am PDT, and that it will be viewable on Macs with Safari and Snow Leopard installed, or iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads running iOS 3.0 or higher.

So tune in tomorrow morning -- we'll see if Apple can handle the demands of its hungry customers on live streaming day. And even if not, we'll be here with all of the information you need anyway.TUAWApple to stream video of tomorrow's live event originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 19:30:00 EST. Joseph Yobo in, Bilica out http://www.muzob.com/items/view/5297 I posted to footballove.com

★ How to Judge the Battle Between Apple and Adobe Regarding Flash http://www.muzob.com/items/view/5296 I shared an item on google reader

Shared by Muzo

Consider: is there more pressure on Apple to add Flash support to iOS, or on websites with Flash-only content to produce iOS-compatible alternatives? Dave Winer argues that the absence of Flash on the iPad “isn’t working”:

I see new Flash content several times every day when I catch up on the news with my iPad. This isn’t stuff that’s going away, it’s new stuff that creative people are publishing. New stuff, not legacy stuff.

In other words, they know we can’t see it on the iPad and they went ahead anyway.

He’s right that Apple hasn’t won this battle, but I think he’s wrong that they’re losing. It’s still far too early to tell.

Here’s how I see this battle between Apple and Adobe. For Adobe, losing would be a large-scale abandonment of Flash by web producers — sites that previously used Flash abandoning it, and new sites never using it in the first place. For Apple, losing would be if the absence of Flash on iOS devices led to people choosing competing devices that do support Flash — i.e. if the absence of Flash for iOS hurt sales of iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads.

I think it’s fair to say that iOS is the leading driver of H.264 HTML5 video on the web. Apple has a web page listing “iPad-ready websites”, and it includes a lot of big-name sites. But — and this is a big but — I don’t think any of these sites has abandoned Flash. They all offer iOS-supported content as an alternative to Flash. That’s not good news for Adobe, since, previously, all of these sites required Flash, but it’s not a disaster, either. From the perspective of desktop (Mac and Windows) computers, I don’t think there’s been much of a decrease in the use of Flash since 2007. From the perspective of iPhone users, though, there’s a lot less “missing content” now than there was in 2007. But, as Winer points out, there’s still a lot of Flash content that has no iOS-compatible alternative.

But is Apple being hurt by this? The only competing devices that support Flash are Android 2.2 phones, which are only just now available to consumers. It’s far too soon to judge whether Flash compatibility leads to would-be iPhone buyers choosing Android phones instead. (It’s also too soon to know just how many Android users will bother to install Flash Player — it’s a Market download, not installed by default, on some Android phones.) Yes, lots of people are buying Android phones — but I don’t think very many are doing so because of Flash. We shall see. And there are still no competing devices for the iPod Touch or iPad that support Flash.1

Before the iPhone, Flash’s advantage was that it was installed on every major web-browsing computer by default. Now, there is a major web browsing OS where Flash is not supported at all. There is no alternative with market share that approaches Flash, though — that’s why we’re seeing HTML5 video as an alternative to, rather than a replacement for, Flash. If Adobe loses this battle, Flash’s decline is going to be long and slow.

Consider: is there more pressure on Apple to add Flash support to iOS, or on websites with Flash-only content to produce iOS-compatible alternatives? Such pressure — both on Apple and website publishers — is best measured not by complaints on the web, but by sales of iPhones, iPods, and iPads. The more they sell, the less likely Apple is to cave on Flash support, and the more likely it is for websites to stop publishing Flash-only content.

Arguably, “netbooks” running Windows — which are thus Flash-compatible — are iPad competitors, and I suppose there’s some number of people who are buying a netbook instead of an iPad, but would have bought an iPad if the iPad had Flash. But I don’t think that number is very large. And I think most netbook buyers see them as cheap, small, lightweight laptop PCs, not as iPad rivals. ↩

Google, Arcade Fire deliver amazing, HTML5-powered music video from the future http://www.muzob.com/items/view/5289 I shared an item on google reader

It takes a lot for a music video to grab my attention anymore. Arcade Fire's HTML5 collaboration with Google, however, does a pretty damn good job.

Head over to The Wilderness Downtown, punch in the address of the home where you grew up, and watch the magic unfold. The "experience" is definitely one of the most interesting demos to come out of Google's Chrome Experiments thus far. It's a fantastic showcase of what HTML5 and modern browsers bring to the table.

As director Chris Milk told Wired, "[HTML5] is in its infancy right now, but I think the browser will be the next widely recognized artistic medium." He continues by adding "It allows such a larger dialog with the viewer. There's actual two-way communication going on between the art and the observer."

One parting note: is it just me, or was that HTML5 progress indicator every bit as annoying as the ones we've grown accustomed to with Flash preloaders? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Do Different Languages Equal Different Realities? [Science] http://www.muzob.com/items/view/5283 I shared an item on google reader

Shared by Muzo

Deutscher also raises the fascinating example of obscure regional languages that have no conception of person-oriented direction. That is to say, there's no my left, or your left. There's no left at all. If a soccer ball lands next to you, Australia's aboriginal Guugu Yimithirr speakers will tell you to reach to your east to pick it up. As a consequence of mapping compass directions across personal since childhood, speakers of such languages have almost superhuman sense of orientation, able to discern north and south as most of us would be able to intuitively "know" front and back. We usually assume words are just a way of expressing ideas already in our heads. But what if it's the other way around? Some linguists say the languages we speak fundamentally alter the way we think, and even perceive reality. The New York Times explores the implications of world-altering linguistics, and how we can learn about the complexities of both speech and speaker. Linguist Guy Deutscher argues that, rather than forbidding us from understanding certain concepts (as in, if you don't have a word for it, you don't know what it is), languages force us to think certain ways. For example, while English doesn't use genders when talking about persons, places, and things, plenty of languages do—and the difference isn't just an extra headache for high school French students. Gendered languages force their speakers to, even unconsciously, consider forks, tables, trees, and sandwiches to have genders. This sounds obvious, and maybe even trivial, but research shows that these properties affect the way Spanish speakers, for instance, view their environments. "Once gender connotations have been imposed on impressionable young minds," explains Deutscher, "they lead those with a gendered mother tongue to see the inanimate world through lenses tinted with associations and emotional responses that English speakers - stuck in their monochrome desert of "its" - are entirely oblivious to." Deutscher also raises the fascinating example of obscure regional languages that have no conception of person-oriented direction. The intersection between mind and word is still a fuzzy one for science, and much work remains to be done. But linguistics offers to arrange the world in a way that makes better sense, and, even if we can't always sit at the same table and chat (or even possess a word for table), make the world a less strange place.
